The 7% sales tax rate is lower than across the state line in Memphis. This cost saving helps attract consumers from the major metropolitan ares to DeSoto County for recurring purchasases and for big-ticket items. The Wal-Mart Supercenter located in Southaven has the highest gross in sales operations in the country.

 

 

Housing Starts Totals

Major Commercial Developers see DeSoto County as ripe for continued retail development. In addition to the tremendous population growth, developers point to the campuses of Northwest Mississippi Communitiy College, the University of Mississippi, and the DeSoto County Civic Center, and the major mixed-use developments planned at the Goodman Road and Church Road/I-55 Interchanges, as well as the Goodman Road/Highway 78 Interchange.

Tourism

DeSoto County businesses benefit from the proximity of tourist attractions in Memphis such as Graceland and Beale Street. America's Blues Highway, a corridor famous for many blues related historical sites, runs from Memphis to Clarksdale, Mississippi passing through DeSoto County.  Tunica, south of DeSoto County, is now ranked as the 3rd largest gaming destination in the United States.

A new 10,000 seat DeSoto County Civic and Convention Center, home to the Memphis RiverKings (ice hockey), and ABA franchise and arenafootball2 team, located on I-55 and Church Road will increase tourism and convention business in the county.
